“The 1605 Battle of Salaspils” – Students Learn History and Create Animation!

In early September, as the anniversary of the decisive 1605 Battle of Salaspils approached, children from the Salaspils region not only commemorated but even re-enacted history in a unique and creative way – by producing their very own animated film about this significant event! This Salaspils cultural project, organized by the association “Development and Innovation Learning Centre,” was more than a simple retelling of a story. It was a journey through history, culture, cinema, folklore, and creativity, bringing together different generations and activities.

What, dear maiden, did you think,
Leaning on the reed so sleek?

On December 2, 2025, the student-created animated film “The 1605 Battle of Salaspils” premiered at the Salaspils District Library. The screening was opened with a song by the Salaspils folklore group “Daugaviņa.” The project’s main element was, of course, the creation of the animated film. During the premiere, as they watched their own creation, the students recalled how they worked with animator Dace Liepa and her colleagues to develop the story, draw the main characters and backgrounds, and film the scenes. The film’s soundtrack was performed by the Salaspils 1st Secondary School folklore group, led by music teacher Gita Kalniņa. This child-made animation is a vivid example of how history can come alive and how a new generation can use modern tools to honor the past. It was an opportunity to learn by doing, by playing, and by creating something lasting. Thank you to Salaspils 1st Secondary School for supporting the film’s creation! The animated film will become part of the Salaspils District Library’s interactive exhibition “The Historical Story of Salaspils District.”

To truly feel the spirit of ancient times, the children engaged in exciting activities:

  • They tried writing with a quill and ink as in the old days – a chance to appreciate how writing tools have changed over time;

  • Puzzles with Latvian symbols provided by librarians encouraged the children to explore ancient symbols, their meanings, and their connection to the present.

  • Students attempted to read a text set in the old “blackletter” typeface, used before the current script was introduced.

At the premiere event, students had fun and brainstormed new ideas together – for the creative process flows best in a free and joyful atmosphere. A well-deserved reward for their work was also provided – the children enjoyed treats and candy!

Thank you to the entire creative team – animation teachers Dace Liepa, Ance Brīvlauka, Silva Utāne, Māra Liniņa; music teacher Gita Kalniņa; the sound recording studio “UgaRecords”; and librarian Maruta Birzniece for inspiring the children! Thanks to all the workshop participants, their parents, and teachers for the invested work, time, patience, and willingness to learn new skills to create this animated film!

The project is being implemented with funding from the association “AIMC,” Salaspils 1st Secondary School, the Salaspils District Library, and the Salaspils District Municipality (cultural project CONTRACT No. ADM/3-24.5/25/340).
